Area Information

Unlike its rough and tumble neighbors to the north, Lake City and Creede, which developed into towns overnight, South Fork gradually developed over the past century into the tourism center it is now.

Prior to the arrival of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad in November 1882, South Fork was a stopping point on the stage line on the way to Wagon Wheel Gap, Creede and Lake City. The railroad, however, brought profound change: cheap, reliable transportation allowed the residents to exploit the great timber resources of the area. Sawmills were built and trainloads of finished lumber have been shipped from South Fork for years.

Agriculture, which started on a modest scale with small farms and ranches in the 1870s, also expanded as a result of the railroad and the markets which it provided. The early decades of the 20th century witnessed a dramatic increase in vegetable production - particularly cauliflower, lettuce and peas - which were commercially grown on the rich agricultural lands between South Fork and Del Norte.

The area enjoys over 300 days of sunshine per year. Average annual precipitation is 15.8 inches. January temperatures average a high of 48 degrees and a low of 8. July temperatures average a high of 91 degrees and a low of 58. Winter brings ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing with 165 miles of maintained trails.

Our community offers a wide variety of restaurants, unique shops and galleries. The area's breathtaking scenery and family oriented activities will captivate and draw you back year after year.

Centrally located between the Great Sand Dunes and Mesa Verde National Park, visitors are limited only by their imagination and the length of their stay in enjoying South Fork, which provides a perfect base for day trips to the historic  mining towns of Creede and Lake City with their museums and the famous Creede Repertory Theater. There are 2 narrow gauge railways nearby and incredible opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Area colleges and universities include Pueblo Community College, Adams State College, Western State College Colorado, Fort Lewis College, San Juan College, Colorado Mountain College and University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Hospitals and medical centers near South Fork include Rio Grande Hospital, Conejos County Hospital and San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center.

South Fork provides abundant hunting, fishing, horseback riding, wildlife viewing and skiing. We are surrounded by nearly 2 million acres of national forest and multitudes of historical, cultural and recreational activities.

Between South Fork and the headwaters of the Rio Grande, there are 47 tributaries with 500 miles of stream to fish. Within 20 minutes of town are 13 lakes accessible by car or short hikes.

South Fork hosts the annual Logger Days Festival, Rhythms on the Rio Grande Concert, 4th of July Duck Races and winter brings ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing with 165 miles of maintained trails Lots of folks come just to ski Wolf Creek.
